Payne's Tavern Area
Person County NC

Payne's Tavern Road is state road 1142 near Hurdle Mills on highway 157 about four miles south of Roxboro. It turns into Bess Daniel Road a ways to the east as it approaches Flat River Primitive Baptist Church. Along this road is where James Daniel and Sally Cocke settled.

The first county court was held at Payne's Tavern in February 1791. Dr. James Paine moved to this area about 1767, owned over 4000 acres of land and is said to have built the first brick house in Person county.
